Professor Emeritus
–This title is to be considered the highest honor the academic
community can bestow upon one of its members in recognition to
those distinguished individuals of the academic community at
Norfolk State University who, in addition to rendering long and
faithful service to the University, have unselfishly made
outstanding contributions above and beyond those expected of all
conscientious employees.
This site and gallery are dedicated to the Norfolk State
University Faculty Emeriti for all that they have done, and
continue to do for the University and our student population. As

Dr. Yatish T. Shah, The first provost of
Norfolk State University, as of June 1, 2008, comes to
Norfolk State with more than 35 years of higher education
experience and more than 10 years of experience as a
university wide senior administrator. Dr. Shah is
second-in-command to the president and serves as the chief
academic officer and senior vice president of the
institution.
As a provost, Dr. Shah will manage the University’s five
schools. Major responsibilities include engaging in
strategic planning, fiscal decision-making, resource
allocation and objective review and evaluation of academic
programs; working directly with deans, faculty, major
University committees, the Board of Visitors and external
governing agencies to improve the University; promoting
academic excellence; providing creative and dynamic academic
leadership in curriculum development; and collaborating in
the development of student retention strategies.
Prior to NSU, Dr. Shah served as the director of the Center
for Advanced Fuel Technology at the University of Central
Missouri as well as provost. He also served as provost and
executive vice chancellor for five years at the University
of Missouri-Rolla where he was chief academic officer,
overseeing all academic programs including management,
pre-college programs, information technology, research and
sponsored programs, technology transfer, undergraduate and
graduate studies programs.
An expert in chemical engineering, Dr. Shah has published or
referred more than 200 papers and books, chapter and
reviews; served as an invited lecturer or presenter at more
than 40 conferences; and has served as principal or
co-principal research investigator for a hot of grants and
awards from several agencies.
Dr. Shah received a bachelor’s degree in chemical
engineering from the University of Michigan and a master’s
and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
